Zack Baun is Injured and Can’t Return to the Field Yet – But He’s Pouring His Heart Into Helping the Rookie Prepare Because the Team’s Goal Is to Win
Zack Baun is going through one of the toughest stretches since joining the Eagles – a lingering back injury has kept him out of team practices – no live reps, no drills, no contact – but instead of stepping away quietly, Baun has chosen a different path: becoming a silent mentor to rookie Jihaad Campbell
Campbell, the team’s first-round pick this year, comes in with high expectations – but he’s still new, untested, and facing the steep learning curve of Vic Fangio’s complex defensive scheme – talent alone isn’t enough – and that’s where Baun steps in, not on the field, but right next to it

“He’s standing by me for every rep – teaching me how to read a QB’s eyes, how to adjust my drop, how to shift just half a step and change everything,” Campbell said – “I don’t see Zack as someone recovering – I see him as a personal coach this team couldn’t buy if they tried”
Baun doesn’t owe anyone this – but in his mind, the Eagles don’t have time to wait for rookies to figure things out – especially at a position as thin as linebacker – “If I can’t be out there playing, I’ll do everything I can to help the next guy be ready – not because I’m losing my spot, but because the team needs him to be better than I ever was,” Baun said
In the NFL, not every veteran is eager to help the guy who might replace him – but Baun doesn’t see it as a personal competition – he sees it as a shared mission – every step Campbell takes forward is a step the whole team takes with him
And while Campbell is learning how to become a pro – Baun, even from the sideline, is still very much at the center of that growth
