Steelers Predicted to Trade Stud Tight End After Jonnu Smith Deal with Dolphins
The Pittsburgh Steelers picked up an exciting offensive weapon in their trade with the Miami Dolphins that brought aboard Jonnu Smith.
The tight end depth chart is crowded now, though.
Pro Football Rumors predicts that the Steelers will clear some space by trading Darnell Washington away.
Washington is a 6-foot-8 mountain of a man who served as the TE2 last season behind Pat Freiermuth.
With Smith and Freiermuth, Washington is looking at almost no play time.
Even at his size, Washington runs a 4.64-second 40-yard dash.
"Washington won a pair of National Championships during his time with the Bulldogs, and despite topping out at 454 receiving yards, the Steelers still snagged him with the 93rd-overall pick in the 2023 draft," Pro Football Rumors writes.
"Now known affectionally as “Mount Washington” in Pittsburgh, the tight end still hasn’t truly clicked on offense through his first two NFL seasons.
After hauling in only seven catches as a rookie, the 23-year-old took a mini leap this past season, finishing with 19 receptions for 200 yards and one touchdown. Understandably, the Steelers have clearly been looking for a bit more."
It probably wouldn't cost much for a team to acquire Washington's huge upside.
That's also a great argument for Pittsburgh to keep him, but if they look to clear out a spot, it probably would be his.
