Promising Young Packers WR Pays Tribute to Legendary WR Billy Howton, Who Passed Away at Age 95
Green Bay – A wave of sadness swept across the Packers community as legendary wide receiver Billy Howton passed away at the age of 95. Howton, one of the greatest receivers in Packers history, left behind a legacy that extended far beyond the stat sheets.
In a heartfelt message, rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden, a highly touted first-round pick this year, offered his condolences to the Howton family and expressed deep respect for the trailblazing icon.

“I never had the honor to meet him, but as a wide receiver wearing the Green and Gold, I feel his legacy every time I step on the field. Guys like Billy Howton paved the way so players like me could dream big and chase greatness.”
Golden also shared that he often watches old game footage to better understand the identity of a true Packers wideout—and Billy Howton’s name always stands out.
“He played in an era where things were tough—no high-tech helmets, no advanced playbooks. But he still gave it his all for the team and for the jersey. That’s the kind of spirit I want to carry with me throughout my career.”
On behalf of the locker room, Golden extended his sympathies to the Howton family and affirmed that the team would honor his memory by giving their all on the field this upcoming season.
“Some names never fade in Green Bay—and Billy Howton is definitely one of them.”
