Chiefs Icon Tamba Hali Returns to Kansas City as Rookie Coach for 2025 OTAs

Kansas City, MO – June 6, 2025

Tamba Hali, the Kansas City Chiefs’ legendary linebacker and six-time Pro Bowler, has rejoined the team as a rookie coach for the 2025 Organized Team Activities (OTAs), sources confirmed to ESPN. The Super Bowl LIV contributor, whose 89.5 career sacks rank among the franchise’s best, is embarking on a new journey to shape the Chiefs’ next generation of defenders.

Hali, who retired in 2021 after 12 seasons with Kansas City, is working under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to mentor young pass rushers. “Arrowhead’s my home,” Hali said. “I’m here to pass on what I learned to these kids.” His arrival strengthens a defense navigating the departures of key players like Nick Bolton and Justin Reid.

Coming off a 40-22 loss in Super Bowl LIX, the Chiefs are tapping Hali’s expertise to develop rookies like Ashton Gillotte and guide veterans like George Karlaftis. Hali’s 33 forced fumbles and 105 tackles for loss from 2006 to 2017 provide a masterclass in quarterback disruption, critical for facing AFC foes like Denver’s Bo Nix.

Hali’s coaching stint began during OTAs at the Chiefs’ training facility, where he’s already making an impact. “Tamba’s intensity is unreal,” Karlaftis said. “He’s teaching us how to dominate.” His focus on Gillotte, a third-round pick, aims to fortify a defensive line weakened by Omarr Norman-Lott’s ACL injury.

Chiefs Kingdom took to X to celebrate Hali’s return. “Tamba coaching our D-line? We’re back!” one fan tweeted. Another posted, “Hali’s a Chiefs god—perfect move!” The fervor echoes Hali’s 2011-2015 Pro Bowl run, when he wreaked havoc alongside Derrick Johnson.

Hali’s transition to coaching aligns with other Chiefs legends like Dustin Colquitt, who retired in 2025. A native of Liberia, Hali’s path from Penn State to the Chiefs Hall of Fame inspires players like rookie linebacker Jeffrey Bassa. “He’s a living legend,” Bassa said. “His stories fire us up.”

With $11.7 million in cap space, the Chiefs are rebuilding around Patrick Mahomes, Rashee Rice, and Chris Jones. Hali’s cost-effective coaching role supports GM Brett Veach’s strategy to prioritize talent development while preparing for a season-opening clash against the Chargers in Brazil on September 5.

As Hali swaps cleats for a clipboard, his return fuels optimism for a Chiefs revival. Can the pass-rushing guru’s fire drive Kansas City to Super Bowl LX? Chiefs Kingdom is convinced their legend is just getting started.
